A recent article in Adventure Magazine questions the standing rule that eight glasses of water are needed every day for a healthy lifestyle. It seems as though some people give up on drinking water at all, because this seems to be such an unreachable goal.
Well, take heart. If you're one of the people that find eight 8-ounce glasses an unreachable goal, keep reading.
The "8 by 8" rule comes from a report that was created in 1945 by the National Reseach Council's Food and Nutrition Board. According to Darmouth professor, Heinz Valtin, what they didn't tell us all these years is that the water that we consume in our food is included in the total, and that's apparently about 34 ounces a day. Which means that the average person only needs to drink about four glasses of water a day.
Now remember, the amount you need to consume will depend on your lifestyle. If you are an athlete you will need to drink a lot more than the average individual. You will also need to drink more if you are working out in the sun. In those circumstances, be very careful to drink more than you think you need. If you start to get a headache, it's often a sign that you are not drinking enough. Also, be careful of consuming alcoholic beverages in hot weather. For every glass of beer or wine that you drink you should drink one to two glasses of water. However, under normal circumstances, if you're one of the people that can only drink 4 or 5 glasses a day without feeling like you're drowning, you can rest easy that you're actually drinking the correct amount of water for a healthy lifestyle.
