Valentine’s Day is a classic time to make the move and propose to the one you love. There are many ways to pop the question. Here are some of the ways we’ve heard about through the years that we thought were romantic or over the top.
- Classic is always good. Get down on one knee and show her the ring. It’s hard to go wrong with something traditional. If you want to go one step further, ask her father first for her hand in marriage.
- Take him/her out to dinner and arrange to tie the engagement ring to the stem of a champagne glass that the waiter delivers to the table. (Variation on a theme: have the engagement rings served in the dessert. Caution: Do NOT actually put it in the dessert. Place it on a cupcake holder or a doily, or something that will not risk your fiancé ingesting the ring.)
- Tell her/him that you'd like to play Scrabble®. Spell out "Will you marry me?" on the board. Have this set up ahead of time.
- Send him/her a balloon bouquet with “Will you marry me/” spelled out on the balloons.
- A singing telegram with your proposal is always a unique delivery. (Variations on a theme: some of the barbershop quartets will also do singing telegrams.)
- Write a special poem with your proposal, and read it to him/her at their favorite spot.
- Set up an evening candlelit picnic and ask her to marry you under a full moon.
- Send a dozen roses at breakfast, a dozen roses at lunch, a dozen roses at dinner, and then show up with a single rose with a ribbon tied around it with "Will You Marry Me?" written across the ribbon.
- Buy some Conversation Heart candies and find the heart with “Marry Me” on it. Hand it to your love and see what they say.
- If you both like to hike, head to a waterfall or the top of a mountain and propose your everlasting love with nature as the perfect backdrop.
- Make a DVD of some of your favorite times together. Apple’s iMovie is great for this! End your movie with “Will you marry me?”
- One that we’ve seen a number of times over the years on the Southern California freeways is the billboard proposal. The question is popped on a billboard that is located on her route to or from work.
- Have a skywriter put your proposal high in the sky. Just make sure it's not a windy day!
All of these proposals can be a lot of fun. Use your imagination and make it a special occasion for both of you. The options are as limitless as your imagination!
Congratulations and Happy Valentine’s Day.
