Santa Barbara History
The "Queen of the Missions." On a spring day in 1782, the Padre Presidente of the California Missions, Father Junípero Serra, and the Spanish Governor de Neve founded (as Serra supposed) the presidio and mission of Santa Barbara.

The Tenth Mission
Santa Barbara was the first mission founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, Father Serra's successor as President of the California missions. Although Father Serra dedicated the site of the Santa Barbara presidio (fort) in April of 1782, he did not have permission at that time to found a mission in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara has always been known for its natural beauty. Father Serra had spoken often about it as an ideal site for a mission. Father Lasuen founded the mission in 1786.

The tenth mission was founded on December 4, 1786. It was rededicated on December 16, 1786, by Father Lasuén and named for Saint Barbara.
