Movie: Finding Forrester
Characters: Professor Robert Crawford (F. Murray Abraham), Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown)
This challenge between Professor Crawford and Jamal points out the frustration students feel faced with instructors who attempt to belittle them in front of the class. Unfortunately for Professor Crawford, things don't always work out as expected.
(Crawford) "You, of all people here, should know who wrote that passage. And do you know why, Mr. Coleridge? I repeat, do you know why?"
(Jamal) "Just say your name, man."
(Crawford) "Excuse me.
Did you have something to contribute?"
(Jamal) "I just said that he should say his name."
(Crawford) "And why would it be helpful
for Mr. Coleridge to say his name?"
(Jamal) "Because that's who wrote it."
(Crawford) "Very good, Mr. Wallace. Perhaps your skills do extend a bit farther than basketball. If we can turn to page... You may be seated, Mr. Coleridge. Turn to page
in the little blue book that..."
(Jamal) "Further."
(Crawford) "I'm sorry?"
(Jamal) "You said my skills extend "farther"
than the basketball court. Farther relates to distance. Further is a definition of degree.
You should have said further."
(Crawford) "Are you challenging me?"
(Jamal) "No more than you challenged Coleridge."
(Crawford) "Perhaps the challenge should have been directed elsewhere. 'It is a melancholy truth that even...'"
(Jamal) "'Great men have poor relations' Dickens."
(Crawford) "You will hear the beat of..."
(Jamal) "Kipling."
(Crawford) "All great truths begin..."
(Jamal) "Shaw."
(Crawford) "Man is the only animal..."
(Jamal) "That blushes"
(Crawford) "or needs to""
(Jamal) "Mark Twain. Come on, Professor..."
(Crawford) "Get out! Get....out."
(Jamal) "Yeah. I'll get out."
