Hanging onto the coat tails of a reluctant hero as he "jumps" us on a wild ride across the globe, makes this film a fantastic romp of pure entertainment!
I have to admit to being a geek. I love science fiction, computers, and many other geekish pastimes. I also love the thought that we might one day evolve to have exceptional powers that will let us do some of the things we only dream of in comic books. Pick your favorite X-men. If Shadow Cat is on the list you're going to love Jumper!
In this fun little film, science is turned upside down when a few individuals throughout time develop the ability to spontaneously create and "jump" through worm holes. They can jump 3 inches or across the world, as long as they have been to the location before or seen it in a photo (theoretically so there is a clear mental image of the location).
Enter the bad guys with Samuel L Jackson as the baddest of the bad guys. It appears that "jumpers" have been appearing with the power to make and harness worm holes on and off throughout history. Paladins are zealots who feel only God should have a power such as this, and their mission is to kill as many as possible. Talk about wet blankets!
Hayden Christensen plays David Rice, a somewhat abused and neglected teen who "jumps" when he's almost killed falling through the ice on a river near school. From that first jump on, you barely have time to catch your breath as David Rice jumps us here and there. His love interest played by Rachel Bilson is a cute little thing that has an underlying tough as nails interior, which works for her.
The bad boy to Hayden's reluctant hero is Jamie Bell, who plays Griffin. He's all fire and frustration as the newbie continually mucks things up. He tries to lead Hayden towards a tougher lifestyle, but Hayden ends up preserving his decent inner core.
Physics and fun blend wonderfully in this film, combining into an e-ticket wild ride that I could sit through again tonight. There won't be any Academy nominations for this film in 2009, but if you want to leave the theater feeling great, you can't go wrong with "Jumper."
