It's Earth Day - Review
By Cynthia Kirkeby
May 10, 2008, 13:40 PST

When my kids were younger, we read all of the Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. Luckily, she is still writing new stories, like It's Earth Day! In this new book, Little Critter learns that the polar bears are in danger, and he explores how we can conserve energy to reduce global warming.

Turning off lights, recycling, planting new plants, and using water carefully are a few of the things that Little Critter does to help the world. At first he feels that he isn't doing enough to help and he tries to make a climate control machine. Finally Little Critter comes to the realization that we are all climate control machines if we conserve energy and protect the environment.

This is a great little book for kids. The issue is timely, and the character of Little Critter is as endearing as always. My only suggestion would be to tell kids to be careful about wasting paper as well as other resources, when they hit the part about Little Critter putting posters up all over town. There are many ways for us to recycle and preserve our resources. Mercer Mayer has even included a list of ten things kids can do to help save the planet, on the inside cover of the book.

Protecting the environment starts with educating each generation, so that it's a priority in their lives, and this is a great way to start. In addition, Mercer Mayer is promoting a new group called GreenDimes, a new group who is trying to make a difference by reducing junk mail. It is not only irritating to receive, junk mail is also bad for the environment. By going to www.greendimes.com you can sign up for a free service to reduce your junk mail or you can sign up for the Green Me Bundle for $36.00 and make a difference by:
  • Signing up for the junk mail reduction service
  • Using the reusable Chico shopping bag
  • Supporting GreenDimes by wearing their cool t-shirt
  • Greening your house by using the 2 compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Getting your own copy of Earth Day while they last
  • Greening the earth with the ten trees they will plant in your name as part of the package.
All in all a pretty cool way to help the earth!
