Grandma's Library - Review
By Cynthia Kirkeby

Eileen Pierre is a mother of three, and a grandmother as well, who recently finished a book of short sweet tales, called Grandma's Library. In it she shares stories that are at times endearing and enlightening. Most of the stories are cute, little stories that teach children some simple life lesson.

The stories of "Ted E Bear" and "Joey Gets Lost" are both stories of finding yourself far from home, only to have friends help you find your way. Ted E Bear in particular will make you think of your favorite stuffed animal which has grown shabby and threadbare through the years. They may not be full of stuffing, but they are full of love.

I didn't like the story of the little duckling that walks to a different beat in "Doing Things Right." Throughout the story the poor little guy is repeatedly asked, "Can't you do anything right?" That question and others like it have haunted many kids through their entire lives, undermining their self-esteem. Being one of the kids that walked to the beat of a different drummer, I was fortunate to have parents and a community that celebrated my difference, allowing me to pursue unusual dreams, like ClassBrain. Unfortunately, too many other kids have found it difficult to follow their dreams, because every time they step away from the norm, they hear the terrible refrain of "Can't you do anything right?"

Another story in Grandma's Library that had a great message for kids is "The Treasure Hunt." In it two boys learn that if we set aside our preconceptions we may just find a new friend, and a new way of having fun. Ms. Pierre teaches children being different can be an advantage, and a "handicap" doesn't have to be limiting.

Overall I think that "Grandma's Library" is a sweet collection of stories from a woman who loves to write, to everyone who loves to read. The book probably would have benefited from a little more editing, a better illustrator, and a lower price tag, but it's nice to see Eileen Pierre share her unique tales will the rest of us.
