For those of you who read our review of Mars 3D, and who enjoyed the unique exploration of Mars, the new book by astronomer Jim Bell will be a welcome addition to your library. Structured in the same way as his book on Mars, Moon 3D begins with some short essays on lunar exploration, past and hopeful future, and then proceeds to take you on a unique tour of our nearest planetary body.
I love the built-in 3D glasses in this book. Knowing my kids and myself, a separate pair would be lost in days, if not minutes, but with this design I thankfully don't have to worry about it.
If you would like an up close and personal tour of the moon without needing a high powered telescope, then this unusual book is just the ticket. Sit back in your chair, pop up the build in 3D glasses, and take a walk along the moon this evening.
A great way to share science with younger children, it's a little like the Viewmasters of years ago. Kids fascinated with space may find themselves turning the pages as they imagine themselves walking through craters like the astronauts of the 20th century. It seems a shame that we've all but abandoned our exploration of space, and that this may be as close as our children will get to walking on the moon.
