Not only do Chicago Jazz fans get to enjoy the music of their favorite jazz legends at the annual Chicago Jazz Festival, they also get to listen to the jazz on Chicago's famous trolleys that have been renamed after famous jazz musicians.
The festival takes place at the end of August each year, and features some of the greatest names in jazz music. Likewise, the trolleys will feature both jazz greats and recent jazz finds.
Here are a few of the stars who Chicagoans will be able to enjoy on a trolley ride or live at Jazz Festival.
- Dee Dee Bridgewater - Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of the premiere vocalists in modern jazz, and has performed as a guest artist with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. This year she will give tribute to Betty Carter at the Chicago Jazz Festival.
- Eddie Palmieri - Eddie Palmieri, one of the giants of Latin Jazz, has always made Chicago a regular stop on his tour routes. This year, he headlines Friday night of the Chicago Jazz Festival.
- Gerald Wilson - Gerald Wilson wrote his famous State Street Suite in tribute to the great city of Chicago, and this year will premiere a brand new commissioned piece at the Chicago Jazz Festival.
- Kenny Burrell - One of the foremost guitarists in jazz, Kenny Burrell will appear as a special guest at this year’s Chicago Jazz Festival with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra.
- Ornette Coleman - A maverick saxophonist and composer, the music of Ornette Coleman is credited as one of the catalysts for the music of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the venerable Chicago-based organization. As a rare performance, Ornette will close the Chicago Jazz Festival.
