If you've never seen a kumquat, it's a tiny little citrus fruit, but unlike Oranges, you don't peel them when you eat them. They are fun and easy to eat, and each year the folks around Dade City start making some of the most delicious kumquat recipes you'll ever taste for the Kumquat Festival.
The self-proclaimed kumquat capital of the world is located in St. Joseph just outside of Dade City. Since 1998, locals have celebrated the kumquat on the last Saturday in January, featuring unique kumquat recipes and tasty samples. Some of the tastiest creations from previous years were Kumquat Pie, Kumquat & Rum Ice Cream, Kumquat Salsa, Kumquat Pound Cake and Kumquat Chips. All recipes are compiled into a Kumquat Cookbook, which is a top seller at the festival.
Other attractions at the Dade Kumquat Festival include:
- Arts and crafts show (one of the largest in the county with more than 300
booths)
- Antique Car Show (including a collection of antique fire trucks)
- Quilt Show
- Wagon rides around Historic Downtown Dade City
- Country, pop, bluegrass and folk musical entertainment
- Crowning of the Kumquat Queen
- Farmer's market with herbs, honey, plants and citrus trees for sale
- 5K Run & Walk
- Kumquat Kiddie Corral
