The Ink Sketch - Drawing the Human Face in Pen
By Jason Rudolph Pena, Cynthia Kirkeby
Feb 2, 2008, 09:00 PST

As you watch Jason sketch the female face he is working on in this demonstration, pay particular attention to the proportions of his sketch. Which features align with which other features? You'll see how he aligns certain features with each other as he builds out his drawing. It is very helpful when you are beginning to draw people to watch an artist like Jason as he works. He goes from one feature to the next; building out the drawing as a whole. Many times, if you ask an artist why he builds out the face the way he does, he wouldn't be able to tell you, however, watching Jason, you can see that he moves to the next feature that aligns with the part he has just completed, and his sketch quickly takes on a perfect balance.
