Young Epidemiology Scholars Program -$500,000 in scholarships
By YES! NATIONAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Dec 19, 2007, 7:23pm

The Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition, a highly competitive national program that awards nearly $500,000 in scholarships each year, invites high school juniors and seniors to submit original research projects that use the principles of epidemiology to explore important health-related issues. Top-prizes in the competition include two $50,000 college scholarships.

The YES Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by the College Board, is designed to spur students' interest in epidemiology - the science of studying the causes, distribution, and control of disease among populations. YES competitors must develop a research project in which they identify a health problem, gather data about that problem, and address the problem based on the results and analysis of the data. Among the project topics featured in last year's YES Competition were teenage obesity, HPV, the effects of video games on health, sports injuries, stress, drug and alcohol abuse and reducing health threats caused by air pollution.

All applications for 2008 are due by 5:00 p.m. ET on February 4, 2008. The 60 regional finalists will receive an expense-paid trip to the nation's capital in April 2008 to present their research and compete for scholarships. Another 60 semifinalists each receive a $1,000 scholarship as part of the competition. Students can go to www.collegeboard.com/yes to learn more.

More than 700 high school juniors and seniors nationwide entered the 2006-07 YES Competition. The national winners were chosen by a panel of judges that included some of the nation's top epidemiologists as well as high school teachers. The competition celebrates its fifth year in 2008, with the first class of scholars having graduated from college and some moving on to careers in public health.
